Background

Sometimes electronic mail is returned as being undeliverable. Our customers often ask us how to tell what the problem is.

Answer

The reason why a message is returned unsent is usually included within the returned message itself along with comments from servers it has passed through on the way to the attempted destination.

Look for messages such as:
Host Unknown : This means the internet can not find the host domain you specified in user@hostdomain.com.etc. This means either the host is not working or that you may have a typo in the way you entered the name.
User Unknown : Same as above but this time when found the host domain says that the user does not exist. In this case check the users address.
Service Unavailable : This is not as common anymore but it means you got everything correct, they just do not want to connect to anyone at this time. They may be working on the server or it may be full at this moment.

Also check for comments regarding size, maybe an attached virus or even content from the rejecting server.
