Spam Filters - Blocking Incoming Spam

Area: Electronic Mail
Topic: Incoming Mail Problems

Background

When an email message arrives on the TECH 2U mail servers the sender is checked against a known list of "spammers". These are people that repeatedly send out large quantities of unsolicitored bulk emails. Typically "porn" or "get rich quick" type messages. If a message arrives from one of these people the servers are instructed to discard the email message. On a typical week our servers trash between 50-100,000 junk email messages of this kind.

If someone you know sends you an email message that does not arrive (and they are not a known spammer) they should receive an error message telling them why the message was rejected.

For example they may be unlucky enough to be using a "spam friendly" Internet Service Provider whose own mail servers are hosting a spammer and hence all outbound messages from that server will be affected.

What we need to do is get a copy of the error message from which our Support Desk can ascertain the problem. Alternatively have them contact their own Support Desk to enquire why their mail servers are blocked for spamming.
