Mail Servers with Variable IP Addresses
Area: Electronic Mail Background On the Internet SPAM messages are a large (and getting larger) issue. On the Internet each server has a dedicated IP address, akin to a street address. This is how the various connected computers and devices determine where to send and receive information. Each properly setup mail server has its own IP address. This is so other email servers know where to reach it. This should therefore make it a simple matter to identify where the various SPAM issuers reside and to block those addresses from being able to send outbound email. Solution Just as we know how to block these sending IP addresses the spammers know that we do this and so try and move their email servers around to different addresses. When one address gets blocked they simply move to another. Theoretically they can keep changing addresses ad-finitum. To prevent them doing this our system (which knows that each properly configured mail server should have its own dedicated IP address) simply blocks all sending mail servers that do not have their own address. If you are trying to recieve an email from a friend that has their own mail server ask them if they use a dedicated IP address for that server. If not, and you still want to receive email from this person they will need to pass outbound email via the correct mail server for their Internet Service Providor. Alternatively they can reconfigure their mail server in line with current practice and obtain a dedicated IP address.
