Benefield, died last Wednesday at the Eventide Home in Eltham in her 104th year. Mrs Benefield was a remarkable person. In the 1890s she was brought up on a farm near Egmont Village with her seven brothers and sisters. When asked if she remembered the arrival of the motor car, her reply was "too right I do. Someone would shout 'here comes a car' and all us kids would rush down the road for a look." Her father couldn't afford horses so the kids would walk to the Wortley Road School. They all helped milk the cows by hand and took the cream to the factory by pony and trap. In 1912 she married and she and her husband William went farming on Kent Road. "You get on with the ploughing and I'll do the milking," May would say. William, who was a foreman for the Stratford County Council, died in 1973. May lived on her own and at 99 was still living alone and cutting her own firewood. In 1989 she broke her hip and moved into Eventide. She celebrated her 101st and 103rd birthdays by hand milking a cow at the home. She died peacefully at the home last Wednesday and is survived by a sister, Bessie Bray of Stratford.BIRTH and DEATH dates estimated by me from above.
