Using a Search Engine.

To search for information on the web, follow the steps below.

  1. Go to the web address of your search engine. You will either see a list of topics or a box with Search next to it.

  2. If you see a list of topics, click on the topic that relates to what you are looking for. Another list of topics will appear. Keep clicking on the most relevant topic until you find the web pages that interest you.

  3. If you see a search box, type your keyword(s) in it and press enter. A list of web sites will appear. Either look at the sites in the list, or redefine your search to get more specific web sites. When you find the web site you want, click on the link to go to that web page.

Most search engines will help you with your searches. They will have a help button to tell you how to search, or a refine search link will appear when your search returns eg 3000 web sites. Click on these links and read the information. It tells you how to narrow your search so you find what you want.

The main problem with searching is using keywords. For example, searching on "golf" will find every web site that refers to golf. Searching on "golf" and "Australia" will find web sites that refer to both Golf and Australia. Unfortunately, how to enter the words "golf" and "Australia" so the search is for sites that contain both words varies between search engines. The help information will tell you how to do this. Finding which keywords to use is a matter of trial and error, and logic.
