My Computer - Browsing
The main use of My Computer is to see what files you have on your computer. We are going to look at the hard disk, however the same procedure applies to looking at any disk drive attached to the computer.
- Open the icon for the hard disk (C drive). A window similar to that shown below should appear on your screen.
This C window shows you all the files and folders you have on your hard disk. Each folder will contain more folders and/or files. We will practice looking at files using the Winnt (for Windows NT) folder.
- Open the Winnt folder by double clicking on it.
- Open the Profiles folder.
- Open the folder with your username on it. An example is emary.
- Open the Start Menu folder.
- Open the Programs folder. The folders and files you see listed here are the same ones you saw earlier in the top half of the Programs menu.
- Open the Accessories Folder. You will see the programs listed on the Accessories menu.
- Double click on the file called Calculator. This will run the calculator program we saw earlier. As a general rule, wherever you see a file icon you can run the program in it (if it is a program file) or view the contents of that file (if it is a data file) by double clicking on the icon.
- Close all windows until you are back at the My Computer window.
