Hidden Characters Hidden Characters are characters that represent actions such a pressing the space bar, pressing Tab, pressing Enter etc. You can not see these characters when your document is printed out. When you are working on your document on the computer, you can choose to see these characters or not.
- Open the file Marianne Dashwood in the Word97 Training folder on the C drive.
- Look through the file.
- Click on the Show/Hide button on the Standard toolbar.

- This will show all the hidden characters in the document. Dots represent spaces, backward P's where the Enter key has been pressed, and arrows represent tabs.
- Scroll through the document and identify the hidden characters.
- Click on the Show/Hide button again to hide these characters.
- Close the file.
