Opening A Document You may wish to open a document that you or some one else has previously typed.
- Click on the Open button on the Standard toolbar.

NOTE: As well as clicking on the Open button, you can also access the Open dialog box by selecting File/Open from the Menu bar.
- The following dialog box will appear.

This dialog box works in a similar way to those you have already seen.
- The name next to Look in: is the name of the folder you are currently looking at. My default this folder is My Documents.
If your document is saved in another folder, you have to change the Look in field to this folder. We will change it to the folder Word97 Training on the C drive.
- Click on the black arrow next to this box. A list of the drives on your computer will appear. You can open drives and folders in this list until you find the folder you want to save your document in.
- Click on the C drive icon. A list of all the folders on the C drive will appear, as shown below.

- Click on the folder Word97 Training and click on the Open button.
The folder will open up and a list of the files in it will be shown.
Note that we could also have done this by double clicking on the folder.

- Click on the file The Lady of Shalott (so it is highlighted in blue) and click on the Open button. The dialog box will disappear and the file will be open in front of you. Note that you could also have opened this file by double clicking on it.
- Close the file The Lady of Shalott.
- Select File/Open or click on the Open button to bring up the Open dialog box.
- Look at the folder in the Look In field. It is Word97 training. When you open a file in Word97, the folder that appears in the dialog box is the last folder you opened a file from.
- Open the file Clancy of the Overflow.
- Close this file.
