AutoCorrect
AutoCorrect is a function of Word97 that automatically corrects common spelling mistakes. To see how it works, watch the screen as you work through the exercise below.
- Open a new document.
- Type the word yesterday and watch the screen when you press the space bar after it. Word97 thinks you are beginning a sentence and will capitalise the word.
- Continue typing in the following, watching the screen as you press the space after each word to see the corrections Word97 makes.
I went to teh beach. It was monday so everyone was at school except me. MUm said i didnt have to go because it was my birthday.
- To see all the corrections Word97 will make for you, select Tools/AutoCorrect. The following dialog box will appear.
- The top of the box shows the general corrections Word97 will make. You can turn these corrections off by removing the tick next to them (click in the box with the tick to do this). We will leave them on.
- The bottom section shows common spelling errors and how Word97 corrects them. Scroll through the list and see what is replaced with what.
- You can use this function to your advantage. Click in the Replace box and type in your initials.
- Click in the With box and type in your full name.
- Click on the Add button and then OK.
- Go to a new line and type your initials. Press the space bar. Your name will appear instead of the initials. This is very useful if you type many letters etc.
- Select Tools/AutoCorrect again.
- Scroll down and locate your initials in the Replace box.
- Click once on the entry for your initials so it appears in the Replace With boxes. Click on Delete. This will remove that entry from the list.
- Click on OK.
- Close the current document without saving the changes.
The Thesaurus
- Open the file Invitation.
- Select the word cordially. We want to replace this with another word.
- Select Tools/Language/Thesaurus. The following dialog box will appear.
- Under Meanings, the different meanings of the word are given. Politely is highlighted so the other box shows the synonyms for politely.
- Click on Related Words to see a list of words with similar meanings to cordially. Click back on politely to see the synonyms again.
- Click on kindly. This is the word we will replace cordially with.
- Click on Replace. The dialog box vanishes and the word cordially has been replaced by kindly.
- Save and close the file.
Shortcut Spelling
- Open the document Spelling. It contains some misspelt words, which are indicated by a wavy red line.
- Click right on the first misspelt word. A list of alternatives will appear.
- Click on the correct spelling, car. The word will change to this spelling.
,p>- Click right on the next error, birfday. The correct spelling Birthday does not appear in the choices you are given.
- Click on the option Spelling and correct the word yourself in the dialog box that appears.
- Continue to correct the other misspelt words.
- When you have finished, save and close the file.
Zooming in and out
Zooming is a way of increasing or decreasing how big the document you are looking at appears on the screen. It does not effect the size of the printed document.
- Open the file The Man from Snowy River.
- The easiest way to zoom in and out is to use the Zoom button on the Standard toolbar.
- Click on the down arrow next to this button. A list of various magnifications will appear.
- Select 10% magnification and see the effect of this.
- Select 50% magnification and see the effect of this.
- Select 200% magnification and see the effect of this.
- If you want a magnification that is not on the list, select the magnification showing and type in the one you want.
- Select the numbers 200 and type in 90. Press enter and see what 90% magnification looks like.
- Return the document to 100% magnification.
- Save and close the file.
