NonBreaking Hyphens and Spaces There will be times when you are writing something with spaces in it, for example the date 21st of January, 1998, and you do not want this text split over two lines. For example, if I am writing the date in a letter and it occurs near the end of the line, I want the letter to look like this:
You are cordially invited to Jane's 21st birthday party to be held on the
21st of January, 1998or like this:
You are cordially invited to Jane's 21st to be held on the 21st of January, 1998
but not like this: You are cordially invited to Jane's 21st birthday party to be held on the 21st of January, 1998.
To do this we link the words with non-breaking spaces.
- Open the file Invitation.
- Fill in the date 11th of August, 1998 on the dotted line. Notice that this date splits over the two lines.
- Undo your work.
- Type in the date again. This time, instead of pressing the space bar, hold down the CTRL and the SHIFT key as you press the space bar. This will create a non breaking space.
- The date will all be on one line.
Non breaking hyphens work in exactly the same way. They are created by holding down the CTRL and the SHIFT keys as you press the hyphen key.
