The Font Dialog Box So far we have looked at character formatting (bold, underline, size etc) through the toolbar. We can also perform character formatting using the font dialog box. This also allows us to add effects such as superscript and shadows to our text.
- Open the file Chemical Equations in the Word97 training folder. Look through the file. It is a series of chemical equations. The numbers in these formulas need to be made into superscripts and subscripts.
- Select the heading.
- Select Format/Font. The following dialog box will appear.
![]()
- Notice that a lot of the options produce the same effect as you have done using the toolbar. These include the Font, Style, Size and Colour options. The only options that will produce a different effect are the Underline and Effect options.
- Click on the down arrow next to Underline. Notice that there are many different underlines available to you. When you underline from the toolbar, you can only get a single underline. Select the Double underline.
- A preview of your text will appear in the Preview box.
- Click in the effect Small Caps. This will put your writing in small letters.
- Click in the effect Shadow. This will shadow the selected text.
- Experiment with the other effects before returning to the settings above.
- Click on OK. You will see the changes in the document heading.
- Select the 2 in H2O. This has to be made into a subscript.
- Select Format/Font.
- Choose the Subscript option. Click on OK.
- The 2 will now be little and down the bottom of the line.
- Select the o in 100oC. This has to be made into a superscript.
- Select Format/Font.
- Choose the Superscript option. Click on OK.
- The o will now be little and at the top of the line.
- Fix up the rest of the formulas.
- Save and close the file.
